From The Library Journal

Embroidery and geometry collide in temari, a traditional Japanese fiber craft of spheres embellished with colorful thread. In this comprehensive guide to temari, Suess (Japanese Kimekomi: Fast, Fun, and Fabulous Fabric Handballs ) introduces the basics of the craft, beginning with creating the core of the temari ball and progressing to selecting a design for the outside and hand stitching techniques for temari. The patterns range from simple wrapped designs to detailed combinations of wrapping and hand stitching. Diagrams for the designs are provided.

VERDICT Embroiderers of all skill levels, as well as fans of Japanese culture and handcraft, will find themselves inspired by Suess’s creations."

"I have been spending my late afternoons with a beautiful new book by Barbara B.Suess titled Temari Techniques: A Visual Guide to Making Japanese Embroidered Thread Balls. The subtitle is the key here as the “visual guide” actually speaks volumes. For those of us who place an emphasis on the visual the book meets our needs very well. Throughout the book we are given loads of eye candy, as the photography is very beautiful."

"Western temari-stitchers often find themselves in the difficult situation of having to be both teacher and pupil, while in Japan a pupil can all the more easily find a teacher, so this book is highly recommended."

Got this today and already very excited to try the different patterns and techniques described in the book. Just a short intro: I've only been doing temari since the beginning of this year and averaged making 1-2 temari per week. I own several books mainly in Japanese but consider Ms.Suess' books among the best, in fact my go-to for instructions in English. The intermediate and harder patterns can be difficult to decipher but thanks to this new book, I feel confident in heading to that level. Her instructions are clear and this book, like her "Japanese Temari: A Colorful Spin on an Ancient Craft", shows diagrams and guides for some steps described in each pattern. It's good not only for beginners but also as a reference for the intermediate and advanced temari makers. Full of information like how to make the core, the simple and combination divisions, and tips! Tips and precautions to save you time or avoid the common pitfalls on some techniques. I have my share of temari mistakes so it made me smile reading. So if you're still deciding whether to get this book or not, get it! You won't regret it.
